Brainbox supports children and young people with Acquired Brain Injuries and other Neurological Conditions, and their families, across the North East. We offer a Family Support Service for practical assistance, a Community Listening Service for positive emotional support, a beneficiary Social Activity Programme for fun experiences. Our projects include Tots To Teens (0-12), Transition Kids (12-17), Open Arms (for marginalised groups) and Clearer Futures (in collaboration with Headway Northumberland) an intergenerational service supporting 17+ and adults through the adult pathway, both vocational and personal. We run a Community Neuro Drop In Hub in Berwick for anyone with an ABI or Neurological Condition, serving the north of the region.

brainstrust is a brain tumour charity that focuses on support and wellbeing. Little brainstrust is designed for children and teenagers living with a brain tumour diagnosis. Our support specialist for children and families is based in Sussex however has a national role. 500 children a year are diagnosed with a brain tumour, and there are thousands of families living with a brain tumour. Two thirds of children diagnosed with a brain tumour are left with a disability. Families can find communication difficult, and awareness of brain tumours in children is low; this is even though brain tumours now kill more children than any other illness in the UK. We are actively trying to grow clinical links with hospitals and other charities locally and nationally, so that we can collectively work together to provide optimum care to our young patients. Calmer Therapy is an organisation based in Stobhill. We provide help and support to families of children with additional needs. We run various sessions from our centre for all different age groups and abilities. At Calmer Therapy we promote an inclusive and enriching environment and believe that everyone deserves a place to be safe, happy and most importantly the chance to be themselves. We also provide advice and support for DLA and PIP forms as well as support with EHCP and school issues. We have recently opened a community café in Lynemouth which aims to provide affordable meals and opportunities for volunteering and employment for post 16 teens with additional needs. Alongside this we also run a food bank, we receive surplus food from supermarkets and distribute to our families.

Cerebra is a charity supporting families with children 16 and under with brain conditions. We currently fund research throughout the country into various aspects such as behaviour, sleep, premature births and legal issues. We have a sleep service where our sleep practitioner can provide sleep workshops and presentations and also do 1:1 work with families and create a personalised sleep plan. Our regional officers are able to provide information and advice on all sorts of different things, such as looking for specialist equipment (e.g. trikes/car seats) to where to look for funding to help pay for these. I also signpost a lot to relevant organisations/charities and can help with form filling (grants/DLA). We have a lending library where we loan out books for families (for free) these include books on conditions, sleep, sensory, mindfulness, diet, health and wellbeing etc. We also loan out sensory toys, including a couple of weighted blankets. Choice Wellbeing Service was established in February 2023, to support the mental health and wellbeing parent carers across the Northeast area. We are fully aware, being parent carers, working within SEND and being mental health practitioners ourselves, where the gaps in Sunderland/South Tyneside are when it comes to the care of the individuals who are caring for children with additional needs. We are aware that quite often individuals who receive a diagnosis of additional need for their children have no idea where to start, what their entitlements are, or if they are even accessing the correct service or provision. This then creates issues for the individuals in the caring role, impacting their mental health in the long term, then unfortunately, possibly impacting the child.

Communication Matters (CM) is a UK-wide charity committed to supporting people of all ages who find talking difficult because they have little or no clear speech. This can be via paper based communication supports or computer based voice output, we call this AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). Communication can be compromised across many conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Brain Injury, Learning Difficulties and Autism. We have an associate membership of around 400 people. Members come from across the UK and from all the various interests in AAC – personal experience, professional, commercial and research. Members receive copies of our Journal which is published 3 times a year, amongst other benefits. We hold a number of events: most notably our International AAC Conference held over 2.5 days at the University of Leeds each September, as well as UK-wide AAC Information Days (product demonstration days) and Study Days which focus on a particular topic of AAC. Adult Autism Support A needs-led service available to individuals living in Tees Valley who are 16+, Newcastle who are 18+ and Durham who are 16+. Autism Support Service is commissioned by North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (NENC ICB) and delivered by Daisy Chain. The service is designed to be needs-led rather than diagnosis-led, meaning individuals on the waiting list for an autism assessment can also access support.

Define Fine has been created by a small, committed team of parents and professionals who have lived experience of school attendance difficulties. We are a parent/carer-led organisation set up in response to the growing number of children and young people who experience school attendance difficulties. This is sometimes referred to as ‘school refusal’, or emotionally based school avoidance and may be due to unmet Special Educational Needs & Disabilities including physical or mental illness, either suspected or diagnosed, bullying or issues relating to academic pressure, or even the school environment. We provide peer support, using our tried and tested resources and to help parents advocate for the support their children and young people need to be able to learn and achieve. We hope to build up our growing network of peer supporters, who we can train to use our guides for their own family and ultimately to then help other families experiencing attendance difficulties. Empowering parents to be able to effectively work with professionals, should encourage not only earlier intervention, with much better outcomes, but also reduce the risk and impact of unhelpful, and unnecessary attendance prosecutions and social services  safeguarding interventions. Family Fund provides grants to families raising disabled and seriously ill children aged 17 and under. Our grants support a family, improve their well-being, increase quality of life and ease many of the pressures they often face. We are a registered charity and the UK’s largest provider of grants to families living on low incomes who are raising disabled or seriously ill children. Our grants bring practical and essential help that is often a lifeline to a family such as washing machines, fridges, bedding, specialist toys and much-need family breaks. With limited funding we try to help as many families as we can. We use our own eligibility criteria to ensure that we only help families in the most need. We will consider helping a family once every 12 months and will usually look at a grant application 12 months from the date of the last grant. Go Kids Go have been running wheelchair skills training for young wheelchair users since 1990. The training is designed to enable independence and to help ensure that the young people are able to reach their full potential. We run workshops for manual and powered wheelchair users. Some of the skills we teach on the workshop include back wheel balancing, road safety, manoeuvring skills and emergency evacuation as well as an introduction to wheelchair basketball. We bring extra wheelchairs so that parents, siblings and friends can join in with the activities. We also run disability/wheelchair awareness workshops in mainstream schools for pupils and staff. TV presenter Ade Adepitan MBE, learnt wheelchair skills with us as a young man and is now a patron of Go Kids Go.

A small user-led charity which makes life better for children with hydrocephalus (known as water on the brain) and the families who love and care for them. We deliver : Awareness: Every year 1 in 770 babies will be diagnosed with hydrocephalus, yet there is little awareness of the condition and its impact. We are working to change this through targeted awareness raising. Support: We direct families affected by hydrocephalus to organisations that can offer help. We also provide peer-to-peer support, so families feel less alone and can meet others from within their community who are going through the same. Campaigns Through our ‘Get-A-Head’ campaign, we speak up for better awareness of infant head circumference measurement as a tool for early diagnosis of hydrocephalus. Research and training We support research and fund training. This improves understanding of the condition and its management amongst front-line health care professionals, which improves patient care.
